Howard Shumway

Age 83, of Watkins Glen, went home to be with the love of his life and soulmate of 63 years, Reetha, on October 22, 2020.

His hugs, warm smile, and amazing sense of humor will always be remembered. He always had a kind word and a funny comeback for all. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather (Papa), and great grandfather (Big Papa). Howard was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors. He was a very talented artist and woodworker. There was nothing he couldn’t fix. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone that needed help.

Howard was a loyal member of the Burdett United Methodist Church. He served as Head Usher and Secretary for many years. He retired from Shepard Niles with over 40 years as a Technical Illustrator. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years. He took the Boy Scouts on many camping trips regardless of the weather.

Howard is predeceased by his soulmate/wife, Reetha; parents, Peter and Esther Shumway; brothers, Roy Shumway, Arthur Shumway, and Elwin Shumway along with his beloved grandson, Daniel Shumway II.

Howard is survived by his children, Chip (Sharon) Shumway of Horseheads, Daniel (Nancy) Shumway of Watkins Glen, and Dawn (Mark) DePue of Horseheads; Grandchildren, Kelly (Bill) Reese, Jennifer Tabor, Jackie DePue, and Megan (Robert) Smith; Great-Grandchildren, Gabby Reese, Quentin Reese, Tyler Fee, Luke Tabor, Johnathan Shumway, Aurora Smith, and Faith Smith along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will be having a private memorial service on Tuesday, October 27th, at Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home in Watkins Glen. Anyone wishing to make a donation in honor of Howard may do so to Burdett United Methodist Church.

You may express condolences to the family in Howards obituary online at www.RoyceChedzoy.com.

I just became aware of Howard's passing as living in North Carolina, news from Schuyler County travels slow. I have many fond & happy memories of Howard as my Boy Scout leader in Montour Falls along with Louie Robyler. That was troop 53. We went on campouts year round and believe it or not, winter was the best. We camped at a special place in Texas Hollow. Howie, as we called him, always was upbeat and helpful even though some of us scouts gave him a hard time at times. But we loved him. I became an Eagle Scout under his tutelage. I also worked with him briefly at Shepard Niles. I was in the drafting dept. My thoughts are with all his family & friends and i will long remember him. Tim Barrett

I was blessed to know Howard when I worked at Bethany Village. He would tell me all these stories about his family especially his wife. He talked so highly of her and his children. I remember when he would come out for hot chocolate and we'd sit there and talk. He would show me pictures of his wife and him on there wedding day almost everyday I was there. Also he would talk about working at Shepard Niles and how him and his buddy David got into trouble, haha. I also loved seeing those two get together and talk about memories they had. Those two were two peas in a pod! I'll forever remember him with that big smile on his face! You're going to be missed by so many! Fly high.
